Free radicals affect our health. Very much so. Simply stated, a free radical is a highly reactive molecule, that is roaming around in our bodies, damaging everything in its way. This process, called oxidation, is believed to be one of the main reasons as to why our body and brain ages!
Free radicals can be neutralized somewhat by a high intake of antioxidants in your food, but an even more efficient way to repair and protect cells is by making sure that the body’s own defensive system against radical scavengers is functioning optimally. This can be achieved by the broccoli effect.
The scientific name for the broccoli effect is Nrf2. According to recent research, the Nrf2 system, when targeted with plant-derived phytonutrition for example, can trigger a cascade of natural biological mechanisms to protect cells against free radicals. A central effect of this is the protection of the most important energy producer in the cell, the mitochondria. The mitochondria are crucial for the cells function.
